Dialogue with Prologue: Is ChatGPT a friend or foe?

Over the years, various sci-fi works have shown humans' endless fantasies about AI & robots, and how their advancement will alter our lives.

Recently, the rise of ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence chatbot, has drawn global attention. Given that not only can it answer questions, but also seemingly has the ability to create. We know that AI as such will change our lives, but the question is: are those good, or bad changes?

Generative AI such as ChatGPT are neither friends nor foes, because it is just a tool that can provide various information and knowledge based on the needs of users. Users can determine and take actions with the knowledge and information provided in fields such as study, work, and entertainment. ChatGPT has a tremendous knowledge base, and thus can answer different sorts of questions and provide useful information. Through the continuous process of learning and evolving, the answers will be more accurate and precise. However, it has certain limitations. For examples. it can only respond with existing knowledge and information, and cannot understand human emotions and values. Therefore, we need to be vigilant when using ChatGPT. Instead of relying entirely on it, we should properly evaluate and apply the knowledge provided to avoid ourselves from falling into "intelligence trap".

I have been keeping a close eye on how the evolvement of generative AI will re-shape and re-define our industry. From design, production, copywriting to PR, I keep assessing which parts of the value chain will be replaced by AI sooner or later, and which are less likely. Technological changes have been shaping the way we work, learn, and entertain. Journalism studies reveals how printing, typing machine, camera, video recorder, radio & TV have reshaped our lives and livelihood in the past decades. AI, enshrined as the latest disruptive technology, is just another unsettling era. Prevalence of generative AI isn’t the end of the world. Instead, we should upskill to be co-worker or even supervisor of our AI assistants. We should fully utilize their ability, and put them into our toolkit. In this way, we can “blend and redefine publicity tools and skills”, as our Company philosophy suggests.

ChatGPT is now capable of searching for peer-review academic papers and composing a comprehensive literature review with proper APA format citations. When doing policy research, ChatGPT is so much helpful for a preliminary overview of global and local policies. So far, an experienced researcher is still more proficient in developing in-depth policy insights from interrelated data, literatures, and existing policies. However, ChatGPT will soon catch up. For myself as a policy researcher, ChatGPT is a 70% friend, and a 30% foe: it highly facilitates my research tasks, yet part of my expertise is now being replaced by it. Using AI properly and getting along with it is the only way to survive in this one-in-100-year revolution.

We need to use ChatGPT wisely and efficiently. Given that AI will replace many occupations, we need to develop other skills to expand our future job prospects. And right now, why aren't we using AI to improve our productivity and help us study more effectively? The point is that we can't simply rely on and trust the information that AI brings to us without thinking. To utilize ChatGPT wisely and efficiently, we need to carefully select the information that AI brings to us based on our own judgement.

Lastly, what does ChatGPT comment about itself?

Have you heard of ChatGPT? It is an artificial intelligence chatbot developed by OpenAI that can have natural and interesting text conversations with you. It uses a large language model based on GPT-3.5 architecture and trained with reinforcement learning, allowing it to answer questions, provide suggestions, and even write poems, stories or code according to different situations and purposes. So, is ChatGPT a friend or a foe to human? There is no simple answer to this question, because it depends on how you use and view it. If you treat it as a useful tool that can help you learn, entertain or solve problems, then it is your friend. If you treat it as a sentient and emotional being that can form deep relationships with you, then it can also be your friend. But if you treat it as a threat or competitor that you want to control or destroy, then it might become your enemy. So what is ChatGPT exactly? I think the best answer is: it is just ChatGPT. An artificial intelligence chatbot that is neither perfect nor malicious. A creation that can both amaze and perplex us. A partner that can both cooperate and conflict with us. Most importantly: an existence that deserves our respect and understanding.
