Children who remain silent when encountering strangers may be perceived as impolite or shy by most people. However, it is possible that they are suffering from selective mutism. Selective mutism is a form of anxiety disorder, where child patients are lively and talkative in secure environment such as their homes but become silent and withdrawn in certain social situations, such as school or social gatherings, almost as if they have transformed into a different person.
